3 quotes from Look Me in the Eye

  • "When I was a boy, I was told that I was not normal. I thought that meant I could not be true to myself. But in truth, it was the other way around. I focused on my passions and became who I am, not who they wanted me to be."
  • "In a world where many people are trained to conform, the truly exceptional stand out because they refuse to fit in. Embrace your differences; they are the keys to your individuality."
  • "Understanding oneself is the first step to connecting with others. My journey taught me not just about living with autism, but about the universal human experience of seeking belonging and acceptance."

Author : John Elder Robison

John Elder Robison is an accomplished author and advocate for neurodiversity, best known for his memoir, *Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's*. Born in rural Georgia to a country preacher, Robison faced challenges growing up as a self-identified misfit, a journey he shared with his brother. After dropping out of school in the 10th grade, he explored a myriad of careers, from designing sound systems for legendary bands like KISS to building electronic games and working in automotive repair. His life took a transformative turn with his brother's memoir, inspiring him to share his own experiences. Over the past decade, Robison has published several books and numerous articles, and he has contributed to the academic understanding of autism through his roles on various committees, including the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee. Currently serving as the neurodiversity scholar at the College of William & Mary, he continues to educate, write, and speak about the nuances of autism and its place in the spectrum of human diversity. Outside of his literary endeavors, Robison runs a successful automobile repair business, focusing on European cars, and has interests in music, photography, and the outdoors.
